Wow- New Toys!

So yesterday there was a speech given that uplifted spirits and in my opinion will shape the future. Yes, Steve Jobs announced a new product. Oh, the president did give the State of the Union address, but…

A bit of history… my first computer was an Apple II+ which I shared with my brother.  In 1984, my parents decided that I needed a computer for college.  So I looked  at an IBM PC Jr. thinking I needed a “computer.”  The salesman turned me towards this new thing called a Macintosh.  I thought it was so cool, especially- having a cassette to guide me through using this thing called a “mouse.”  That 128kb Mac got me through college, and sold me on the Mac.  I am definitely opinionated when it comes to computers- even having worked in an “anti-Apple” environment for almost 20 years.  So Apple introduces the iPad.  People don’t get it and I think… “wow.”

See my parents are interesting beasts.  My dad is under the impression that the top of line is what he needs no matter what.  I have seen them buy computers that they don’t need.  So I see the iPad as a perfect device for people like my parents.  those people who only use computers to check email, Facebook, and use the Internet.  They don’t need much else.  This fits-  Sue and I are thinking about getting these as replacements for our 5 year old laptops.  I’m interested in seeing an iPad up close and mostly seeing how this will change the playing field… like the iPod & iPhone.  Yes, yes there are things that need work, but then again I am a Mac Zombie and I can’t wait to see My Geek Odyssey on an iPad.

  1. I don’t see what is so special about it. No multi-tasking, no flash support. You would also think that coming from a company that is so renowned for there OS’s that they could come up with an OS for it, not just use the I-phone’s OS. This thing is suppose to be “the next thing in PC’s” not an overgrown I-pod touch. I also have to ask, if that exact same device came out and said Dell or HP on the back instead of having an silhouette of a piece of fruit on it would you be as interested in it?

  2. I thought we had agreed to disagree on this topic… Would I care about it if it was HP or Dell? Not really, because then it would have the anchor of Microsoft dragging it down. As far as using the iPhone OS- it goes back to making things easier. Why create a new OS when the majority of your users already know the iPhone. Multi-tasking? it will come. Flash support? it will come sooner. I find it funny that people think that Apple users are fanatics… when Windows users (Wasn’t it Bill Gates who was quoted saying something about no need for a GUI interface?) get so fired up about trashing Apple products. Why can’t we all just get along? I know I do my best to ignore Windows when possible.

  3. I’m not necessarily a Windows fan, but as of right now it is the best PC OS out there for me. When i am due for a cell phone upgrade here in a few weeks, and make the switch over to a smart phone, I definitely won’t be going with a Windows based device. I’m going to go open source and get a Droid. I never trashed the I-pad because it is an Apple, it’s what it won’t do that I brought up, and I would of said the same thing if it would of been a Dell or HP, or any other device of it’s nature regardless of OS. I’m not against Apple’s products, but I don’t think everything thing that they do is golden just because it’s an Apple. I came really close to getting an I-pod touch, as it really is an outstanding device, and so much more than the MP3 player it gets billed as. I also think the I-pad has some real promise, and if it would of been a proof of concept I would of been impressed. But to go to market with it as it currently is, I think is a mistake on Apple’s part. It will probably sell pretty good as is, but with a few more SW options I feel that it really would be an impressive device and would of been able to do even better on the market. Not trying to pic a fight, that’s just the way I see it on this particular product, I still think your pretty cool (even for a monkey’s minion) 😛

    1. Like I said… We agree to disagree. We each have our reasons for liking (and disliking) various OS and frankly I think we could debate it for hours and still not come to consensus… I promise I won’t force you to use an Apple product as long as you don’t force me to use a Windows PC. 🙂

  4. Oh I don’t try to force Windows on anyone, I’m a open code guy at heart. But as long as the majority of games still use directX, Windows will have a place on my PC’s. If the day comes that opengl replaces directx as the industry leader, or Microsoft releases directx to be installed on other OS’s (which I don’t see happening without a court order), I will probably make the switch to Linux.
