This Week In Comics September 10, 2025
My Pull List for September 10 & Heinlein's "The Crazy Times" or is that Star Trek gets closer to reality.
Wow. What a week… I’m not going to go into politics or any of the issues of the day, but I do think we are either in what Robert Heinlein called “The Crazy Years” or we are, as a society, pushing ourselves closer and closer to the world that will in a couple of centuries become Star Trek. Which is good for our future, but for our present? Not so much.
I’m not going to change anyones minds through this or any post. My thoughts & prayers or spells & chants won’t do anything but make me feel like I’m doing something in a world where things are out of the control of most people and all people do is blame each other, instead of listening and compromising. Then again as my brother would remind me that’s just being “woke” because he doesn’t know any other way to explain his philosophy. So instead of arguing and calling each other names, let’s look at this week’s comics. These are my picks, not everyone will agree with my choices or my thoughts… I’m fine with that if you are.
My Comics
The Unchosen #3 Image Comics W: David Marquez A: Marissa Louise Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys?
Action Comics #1090 DC Comics W: Mark Waid A: Skylar Patridge More of Clark’s early years in Smallville. How will he deal with Lana’s new love?
Red Hood #1 DC Comics W: Gretchen Felker-Martin A: Jeff Spokes
The Future Is ****** #5 REKCAH W: Fred Van Lente A: Mario D’Alessandra The final issue telling the story of how the team came together.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight A League For Justice DC Comics #3 W: Andy Diggle & Rob Williams A: Leandro Fernandez
C.O.R.T. Children Of The Round Table DC Comics #1 W: Tom Taylor A: Daniele Di Nicuolo
Absolute Batman DC Comics #12 W: Scott Snyder A: Nick Dragotta Wow… I guess I should be glad I’m not a close friend of Bruce Wayne in the Absolute Universe. Some flashbacks, but a lot of Bruce learning the consequences of his actions.
Murder Podcast Ignition Press #1 W: Jeremy Haun A: Mike Tisserand
Powers 25 Dark Horse Comics #1 W: Michael Brian Bendis A: Michael Oeming
Hellboy in Love Dark Horse Comics #2 W: Mike Mignola & Christopher Golden A: Alex Nieto So, Hellboy comics seem to be short arcs, since this was part 2 (of 2) and we don’t have any actual resolution just that the bad guy did what bad guys do and our heroes are left trying to figure out what to do next.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion Marvel Comics #4 W: Deniz Camp & Cody Ziglar A: Jonas Scharf Tag! You’re it! Basically who is going to end up with Billie (Mile’s baby sister) by the time this is over. It seems that this series has the role of introducing each of the major players in the Maker’s Universe while playing hot potato with a baby.
Captain America Marvel Comics #3 W: Chip Zdarsky A: Valerio Schiti Interesting how PTSD flashbacks play a role as Steve tries to occupy Doom while the team rescues the hostages… I see how this arc is laying the groundwork for Steve to realize that he needs to embody America, not just follow government orders.
Bullet Adventures Altruist Comics #1 W: Jordan Alsaqa & Randy Stone A: Lara Kane
Universal Monsters: The Invisible Man #1 Image Comics W: James Tynion IV A: Brad Simpson One Per Store Variant For those not in the know… this was a joke variant that was sent out to stores… The cover is the silhouette of the design done by DaNi so it is gloss while the cover is matte. It doesn’t photograph well. That’s not the joke, the joke is the comic - like the character - is invisible. The comic consists of 32 blank pages and because of that bit of whimsy I think it is wonderful.
Deeper Dives:
Powers 25 Dark Horse Comics #1 W: Michael Brian Bendis A: Michael Oeming I’ve been reading Powers since it started (or pretty close to issue 1). I’m only missing a few issues of Powers Bureau to have a complete run. I really enjoyed the comic and now 25 years later we have it being brought back. Do you need all the backstory? Not necessarily, most comic book readers can connect the dots. For those who don’t know, Powers follows the lives to police officers tasked with investigating crimes involving superheroes & supervillains - those with “powers.” The first arc dealt with the killing of “Retrogirl.” We return to Powers thrown into a crime scene dealing with a large body found on a rooftop. from there we learn how things have changed and our new main characters along with a bit of a backstory. After 25 years we are reintroduced to an old friend Deena Pilgrim who was a main character in the original series. As with any first issue we are being shown how the world works and how the characters react to the world and the rules of this world. I’m looking forward to seeing how things play out. as we already have a wrench or two thrown into the works.
C.O.R.T. Children Of The Round Table DC Comics #1 W: Tom Taylor A: Daniele Di Nicuolo ALL Ages?!?! Where a lot of people jumped into fantasy with the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, I really think I jumped in reading Le Morte d’Arthur and the tales of the Round Table. Maybe it was after seeing Excalibur, or Monty Python and the Holy Grail but still I read Malory before Tolkien. Comicbook wise Camelot 3000 was a “maxi-series” I recall having to track down and most likely was the reason for my first trip to the LCS I currently work at.
Again, first issue so while not necessarily world building, it still is setting the stage. We have a group of young friends who go on “adventures.” From what I can tell these adventures just mean going exploring and leaving their cell phones at home. The group is heading to some caves located in the Hollywood Hills, when a meteorite strikes. and after the smoke settles, each member of the group has a weapon attributed to a member of the Round Table. I don’t want to give too much away, but so far it seems to be a good start. Those anti-woke warriors may whine about the distribution and who got what… It’s all part of storytelling. I don’t recall (but then again the Internet wasn’t a thing) There was any pushback when in Camelot 3000, Sir Tristan was reincarnated as a woman. Basically, grow up and enjoy the story, girls are allowed to play too.
After one issue I do recommend this as an all ages read, something to get kids interested in fantasy and maybe in the story of King Arthur.
Red Hood #1 DC Comics W: Gretchen Felker-Martin A: Jeff Spokes Yes, I bought this on speculation and maybe a bit of support for free speech. This title was canceled after the incident in Utah and the writer’s social media post about it. DC Comics then asked all comic shops to send back their copies. There has been a lot of discussion of the hypocrisy of groups screaming about “Free Speech” as long as conforms to their message. I’ve noticed this from both groups, but maybe (due to my “wokeness”) more from one side than another.
As for the actual story… I’m usually not one to read titles that deal with the more ultra violent (gritty) characters but figured since I picked it up, I should at least read it. It happens after the currently unfinished events of Hush2, so I can only hypothesize as to why Jason Todd (the Red Hood) is now in New Orleans. Then again why Huntress followed him is another question. I’m not clear on the relationships in the “Batman Family” beyond Bruce and Selina, and Dick and Barbara. Some flashbacks do help us when it comes to Red Hood, and having read what there is of Hush2 helps, but still, I for one have no idea why Jason would leave. Whatever. He’s in New Orleans investigating some shooting and suicides, dealing with police officers. It is a compelling story, and I guess I would read at least this first arc if it was ever made available. So While DC has stopped this series, I will probably look for comics by the writer and the artist in the future.
One other thing that made me scratch my head was he’s basically walking around in his costume and when he wants to fight crime he pulls the hood over his head after putting on a mask… like people don’t notice? Then again I recall the story of Henry Cavill walking around Time Square in a Superman shirt and no one saying a thing.
Murder Podcast Ignition Press #1 W: Jeremy Haun A: Mike Tisserand I was listening to Podcasts before they were cool. I highly recommend the DC High Volume: Batman series, but more than that, I loved Decoder Ring Theatre and highly recommend listening to that series.
Now podcasts are dealing with true crime, and mysteries Serial was the one that kind of pushed things over the edge. Now Only Murders in the Building and now… Murder Podcast Comic. Except… it sin’t about a Murder. It seems to be about a murder Podcast that causes listeners to commit murder. How this interacts with the story of six friends only time will tell, but so far they are just chatting over coffee… then again, this is (again) only the first issue so we are introducing characters and setting. So what we know from the first issue is limited, six friends who listen to True Crime Podcasts, a weird cult located somewhere in the city planning as yet unknown nefarious things, a missing Senator, and these random murders being caused by a podcast.
I know I previously said I try to avoid gruesome comics, but I also said (previously) I’m trying to branch out a expose myself to genres I wouldn’t normally read.
Bullet Adventures Altruist Comics #1 W: Jordan Alsaqa & Randy Stone A: Lara Kane I guess I have a thing for speedsters. This introduction to the Bullet starts off as our main character, Dale Desouza, is at the end of his life. He’s “old” and now has been tasked with a mysterious mission to “help” a friend… He has to deliver a notebook to his friend around the time he starts his first adventures. I’m curious as to why this needed to be done, and if Dale realizes that there should be consequences to whatever actions he takes… You’d think a guy as old as Dale would understand that. Oh, did I mention I also like time travel stories? After some pretty nice silver age type story telling, ending with Dale falling back to the future… we’ll see if he stepped on any butterflies while in the past.

Bruce: Got your msg. It seems if whatever is happenening doesn't directly impact you - you don't care about that action. It's the 'if not in my backyard' ... . We'll see. And of course, if you can get front page press for your side, all the better - ie, try hard for real tears!
DC Comics pulling back issues because of Utah? I have a problem with that but it certainly is their right. And those copies that don't come back have a future value. To me it is just a chapter in our current 'bann this book' saga. At 84 been through a couple of these so know there is light at the end of this tunnel! But I do remain surprised!
