This Week (or two) in Comics
So many comics so little time... My pull lists for July 30 and August 6, 2025
As you might have figured out I didn’t post any comics for last week. I was at Gen Con and didn’t have the opportunity to pick up or read anything. To be fully transparent (Look! I’m the Invisible Woman!) I’m not even sure which comics came out when and know at least one title was actually released the week before but got behind something in my tab.
I’m catching up but still will limit myself to no more than five kinda sorta detailed reviews with possible minor spoilers. Like my last time I picked a random title outside of my normal reading list to try out. I was interested in the one Godzilla title, so decided to pick up the other new series Godzilla Escape the Dead Zone, I also pushed the button on the Wayback Machine and picked up Mad Cave’s new Speed Racer comic. I’ve really liked their take on Flash Gordon - I admit I like Dan Schkade’s online strip better, but both are good and different enough to not confuse my poor old brain.
I have yet to see Fantastic Four… I’m starting to think it will be out of the theaters before I can find the time to see it 🙄

Huck Big Bad World #3 Dark Horse Comics W: Mark Miller A: Rafael Albuquerque
Godzilla Escape the Deadzone #1 IDW Publishing W: Ethan Parker & Griffin Sheridan A: Pablo Tunica After reading the first issue of Godzilla a couple weeks ago I decided to put on my “Explorer” hat and learn more about the universe that this is happening in. The Pacific Northwest is destroyed by Kaiju and those still around scramble around the ruins to survive. There are mutants around and a legend of a Kaiju/Human hybrid roaming the wastelands. Of course the main character in this story is this guy.
Speed Racer #1 Mad Cave Stufios W: David Pepose A: Davide Tinto The Racer family drama usually takes the lead in the Speed Racer story. Pops is concerned about Speed following in his brother’s footsteps… Speed wanting to rebel… you get it. It seems to follow an updated version of the origin story. Speed meets Trixie, Pop’s is mixed up with some bad guys…
Titans Annual #1 DC Comics W: & A: Phil Jimenez I always talk about how Flash Gordon was what I consider the start of my journey into the world of comics. And it was, but the Teen Titans was the first comic I collected. I recall picking up the Teen Titans at the 7-11 and needing go back and check when the next issue was coming out. This was before the New Teen Titans by Wolfman & Pérez which took it to the next level with amazing stories and so much character development. It was my version of my mom’s soap operas. Phil Jimenez carried that high level on and this Annual is amazing. For those not in the know an annual is usually larger issue that comes out once each year (hence the name) many times it is used as a kick off to a story arc, or the epic conclusion to one. In this case it is all about character development. There have been so many “Who is Donna Troy?” stores over the years. The story of Wonder Girl has been retold so many times. This time it’s told by Donna in an internal dialogue as she heads off to meet her biological father for the first time. Donna was saved by Wonder Woman from a fire as a baby. It was originally believed that her parents were killed… that was partly true.
This is a story of Donna looking back on those moments where she was the most vulnerable and how the people in her life helped her, and she in turn had the courage to help and stand up for the people she cares about. A young Wonder Girl lecturing Batman on showing respect to Robin was classic. Phil Jimenez’s art just brought me back to being a teenager again reading the Teen Titans and falling in love with the characters.
Assorted Crisis Events # 5 Image Comics W: Deniz Camp A: Eric Zawadzkl Have you ever been stuck in a time loop? Assorted Crisis Events deals either a world in which time is working the way we consider normal. In this issue we follow the story of Anna who at 13 got stuck in a time loop and repeated the same 60 seconds an infinite number of times and the Post Traumatic Temporal Stress Disorder it had created. What makes this really stand out is not just Anna’s story, but the way it has been presented graphically. The pages help bring the reader into Anna’s psyche in a way just words could not.
Amazing Spider-Man #9 LGY #973 Marvel Comics W: Joe Kelly A: Michael Dowling I’ve said it before, I like Spider-Man when he’s the “Friendly Neighborhood” variety. I was not pleased with the arc dealing with Hellsgate, I’m not a fan of JR Jr’s artwork with Spider-Man so this issue was a breath of fresh air. The story was more down to earth and the artwork was wonderful. After Peter’s defeat he basically focuses on his life and Spider-Man vanishes. Crime does take advantage of his absence and Tombstone is tightening his grip on New York’s crime. Most of Peter’s social circle are confused and are trying to connect, peter is just ignoring them. The confrontation between MJ (now Venom) and Peter was classic and shows the depth of Peter’s depression. In the end… maybe Spider-Man is back? He looks a bit like the old 1970’s TV version, so who knows what might be going on.

Bruce has a remarkable ability to keep probably 50-100 different story lines in the air and educate us about hus favorites. (How many have not enjoyed drifting off in time travel, going back to dinosaurs or forward to amazing times only you can imagine? And the'annual' comic that ends or starts a story - didn't know that. But the mention of his Mom's soap opera "As the Earth Turns'' I believe, (if Mom couldn't see it live - mandatory recording!) kicked me into time travel! Shall I say poodle skirts time? Thank you, Bruce!
