This Week's Comics
My Pull List plus some other stuff for February 5, 2025
Robert Heinlein created his own interconnected multiverse. He is one of my favorite writers. I recall my friend Eric (really more like an older brother) recommending Heinlein’s Orphans of the Sky when I was just starting high school or maybe it was while I was in middle school. I’m assuming he was taking the Science Fiction class offered at our high school and shared that gem with me. Basically it’s the story of a generation ship that has a mutiny and what has happens generations afterward. That got me hooked. I did end up taking the same class when I was a senior (since only seniors could get into it) and then was honored to be asked to take the “Advanced Projects” section to close out my high school career. Mr. Calkins was one of my favorite teachers, I even painted a mural on his classroom door as a senior art project. Why do I bring this up… current events.

Heinlein’s multiverse has a timeline and where each story he wrote fit into it. There was point in which he labeled “The Crazy Years.” This was in the 1940’s. Online AI describes it as : "The Crazy Years" refers to a period of societal upheaval and rapid technological change, often characterized by a breakdown in traditional values and morality, where a theocracy, a government ruled by religious leaders, could potentially emerge due to the chaos and people seeking stability in strict religious dogma; essentially, a time where society is so destabilized that extreme religious movements could gain significant power and influence. Sounds kind of familiar as we enter the age of Project 2025. Essentially, while I try to avoid politics, it’s getting a bit crazy out there and I just hope everyone is OK, although I know many people aren’t, and some people don’t even know how bad it will get for them… but then again this is what many of those that will be impacted voted for.
Enough of that… on to comics.
My Comics:
The Rocketfellers #3 - Just a day in the life of a family from the future lost in the past. We are still seeing the family adapt to the past while not losing whaat skills they have from the future. Having the family dog cook breakfast, which is a lot more appetizing than food capsules... and something weird is going on with the nano-borgs in the basement.
Ripperland #1 - In the future Things have gone bad for Great Britain and due to circumstances it looks like the entire population is now acting like it’s Victorian times for tourists. No tech is allowed, everyone must cosplay and pretend it is the late 1800’s. Ummm. It does look like this seems to be an “Adult” playground and sadly a rich entitled American ends up murdered. His family is well connected so the FBI sends an agent to investigate
Arcbound #3 - As we recall from issue two… wait I haven’t read issue two. So when last we left Kai at the end of issue one he had been set up and became “arcbound” so he is virtually indestructible, but isn’t entirely human anymore. He’s looking for the Great Vault. and decides to salvage a map from a sunken warship on an ocean planet. As they say the best laid plans of mice… Xander (the first boss? There have to be more than just him) sends out a mercenary to handle it. being a bad guy he has a plan B to make sure he doesn’t have to pay anyone. Hmm…
The Ultimates #9 - This month we find out about Luke Cage. It seems Luke ran into some trouble (he doesn’t even know why… but he was put into prison for “one year.” As our criminal justice system seems to mirror that of the Marvel Universe - twenty years later, he’s still in prison. Luke Cage, being Luke Cage, decides to buck the system and after being given his powers… well, lets say I see prison reform happening whether the authorities want it or not.
Batman # 157 - Batman finally cleans up the mess made by (Gosh, who hasn’t made Gotham a mess?) Still trying to clear his, name and show everyone the true face of “Commander Star”. Funny how is seems the Russians were behind it all (I fear we might find out this is the case in the real world too).
The Spectacular Spider-Men #12 - Elementary is still going through training to learn how to control her powers while everyone is ordering “The Parker” from the coffee shop. There are still a bunch of issues from everyone being in Arcadium and dealing with that - Miles? has feeling for… When the most electrifying couple barges in to figure who gets the name “Electro.” Oh, and lizards.
Absolute Superman #4 - Lois Lane is on the hunt for Superman… While we also meet Jimmy Olson and a few other members of our cast who might have some anger management or PTSD issues.
JSA # 4 - Dr. Midnight has been captured and this is the story of her escape attempt - we don’t know how it will end and it ends on a glorious cliffhanger. We do discover that the Injustice Society (the bad guys) want the Spear of Destiny to complete their evil plans. What’s strange is we also follow Obsidian who I thought was a bad guy but I’ll need to go back and check the last issue to see what is going on.
Time Waits #1 & #2 - Sometimes I miss out of a comic and have to come back to it. This can be difficult to do since I’ve noticed that many of the important books are sold out before I get to my LCS. Other times I try a new story and luck out. This is one of those times. Like I said I like time travel stories, which has made me realize that anything I didn’t like about my past, made me who I am so if I were to go back a change that- I’d be changing who I am and then we get into the whole squished butterfly time loop stuff and my head starts to hurt. Kind of like Blue in this story.
It seems that in the near future time travel is possible for a select few. It seems that a corporation in the future goes back with a strike team to get… seeds. Still haven’t seen enough of this dystopian future to understand exactly why they need them, but I’m pretty sure for nefarious reasons. We learn this through a series of flashbacks from Blue. It seems he has black outs and relives these past events. He ended up in our time happily married and, unfortunately the bad guys from the future have come back for him. By the end of the first issue I was hooked. by the end of the second issue… still hooked. This is published in a magazine sized format and the artwork is awesome in the larger size. I just need to put aside some magazine size comic bags, and figure out where I will store these.
