I really like your prototypes for the curling character creation. The classic race car had the same curves as the curling stone, and the wooly mammoth should be named “Pebbles”. The corn was also fantastic!
AI slop is truly terrible and always gives me the ick. I think people who don’t know how to draw appreciate that it gives them options, but it should never be used commercially.
Artists take pride in their work and their process. I hope that AI art is a short lived fad.
The process is so important, it's not just typing in a prompt. I know I was frustrated especially looking at the AI slop that just makes me cringe. I've decided to just let it go, I go there to curl not to create. That may change, but for the short term it is what it is.
I suspect all of us have been down your road. Someone will always charge in and say 'this is the way it will be because ... ' despite your hours of effort and thought. (Loved both corn and mastodon - unique and fit bill!) In the end you did the right thing for Bruce and your club is the loser. Thanks for all your time and effort on behalf of all club members! Wish everyone a great season. By the way - note you didn't say anything about this honor but ... congratulations on your recognition and election to the premier Cartoonists of America organization! You're first class all the way!
I had mentioned in my conversation that no matter what I was still a member of the National Cartoonist Society and therefore it didn’t matter to me. That may have been the piece that made me feel OK in saying “No”
As for the designs, they are still (and will always be) in my toolbox. After dealing with Cecil for almost a decade and a half I know how important drawing a character over and over again is when creating a final image. Look at what Sparky did with Peanuts or Jim Davis did with Garfield.
Bruce: My 10 cents says if you surveyed your fellow members of our National Cartoonist Society you'll find a vaste majority have said 'no' numerous times. Maybe they have a flag for your bar recognizing that has happened to you? Anyway, saying 'no' is kinda an adult thing adolescents don't recognize! You done good!!
I love the corn guy!! And the mastodon is not something I'd have thought of, but considering it is now our state fossil, a brilliant idea! Boo on them, but good for you sticking to your guns... uh, pencils?
Trying to be creative in a committee with AI being their preferred tool makes things difficult.
I use non-photo blue pencils that when scanned disappear, if that’s what you’re asking about. I added regular graphite to see how the grey tones would look- those can be easily erased. As for the corn guy… I haven’t heard anything local since they met last night- it’ll need to go through the proper channels before they can decide anything, but I’ve got some interest from a group getting dedicated ice in Nebraska.
