Old geocaches never die… they just get archived.  One of the choices when you log a geocache is”needs maintenance” this means the cache needs a little Tender Loving Care.  It could be a full logbook, wet log, all the way to half the container is missing.  This gives the cache owner an email saying “Hey! check out this cache, somethings wrong!”  As a cache owner any kind of note tends to be taken with a grain of salt… some new cachers don’t understand that pieces of paper actually have two sides so once one side is filled up you can actually write on the other side.  Veteran cachers tend to carry with them in their cache bag spare logs, spare containers, etc. to keep a chache going which is nice.

Another option when logging a cache is the dreaded “needs archived”  this tends to be if the cache is no longer there, and neither is the tree it was hiding in.  It is considered good caching etiquette to contact the cache owner first, just to give them a heads up… if they don’t reply then you can send in a “needs archived” sadly civility seems to be a rare thing in some places…
